Key Program Highlights
The Oak Ridge High School Air Force Junior ROTC TX 951 led the Posting of Colors, followed by a moving rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing", performed by the audience. Music played a central role in the event, capturing the spirit of hope and unity. The MLK Youth Mass Choir, directed by Mrs. Lisa Hassler, delivered an inspiring performance of "I Have a Dream," while wearing commemorative T-shirts designed by last year’s poster contest winner. The Resound-Special Needs Ministry Choir moved the audience with their heartfelt rendition of "Old Church Choir," led by Ms. Wanda Horton.
The MLK Adult Mass Choir’s powerful performances included "Who Is Like The Lord," under the leadership of Dr. Don Barrick, and "What He Has Done," featuring soloists Mike Beasley and Molly Garvin, directed by Pastor Joseph McKinney. The closing song, "Strength Like No Other," showcased a stirring solo by Darryl Murphy and marked the debut of Dr. Marquis Faison as choir director. The dedication and expertise of the choir directors and performers underscored the event’s success and left a lasting impression on attendees.
Dr. Jesse Tyson, serving as Master of Ceremonies, guided the program with professionalism and warmth, introducing speakers and performers. Jason Skaer, Chief Strategic Officer at The Church Project, delivered a commemorative tribute, emphasizing Dr. King’s timeless call to serve others.
Scholarship and Drum Major Awards
The event showcased video testimonies from previous scholarship recipients, highlighting the transformative impact of the MLK scholarship program. Sponsored by organizations such as The Howard Hughes Corporation, Woodforest National Bank, and TME Enterprises, the program has awarded over 410 scholarships to students from diverse backgrounds, embodying Dr. King’s vision of educational equity.

This year’s Drum Major Award was presented to the Howard Hughes Corporation for its outstanding civic engagement. The company’s commitment to community building is evident through its extensive support of local education and green space preservation.
Jim Carman, President of the Houston Region for Howard Hughes, accepted the award and reflected on the corporation’s mission. “We consider ourselves true community builders. Community starts with kids and education,” Carman said.
Howard Hughes’ contributions extend beyond philanthropy, encompassing initiatives that preserve 28% of The Woodlands as open green space, maintain 151 parks and 220 miles of trails, and develop cultural landmarks like the 1.8-mile Waterway in The Woodlands. The corporation’s holistic approach to fostering community reflects the vision of its founder, George Mitchell. Additionally, Howard Hughes actively supports over 180 charitable causes annually, demonstrating a deep commitment to civic responsibility.

Two choir coordinators, Bernadine Davis and Elsa Dotson, were also honored for more than 20 years of dedicated service to the MLK celebration. Their leadership has been instrumental in fostering intergenerational and inclusive participation in the choirs.
Vision and Acknowledgments
Cheryl Tyson, MLK Committee Chair, shared her thoughts on the mass choir performances. “It’s so rewarding; I get emotional every time. Just hearing them sing and seeing the dedication from the directors and choir members year after year is overwhelming and humbling,” Tyson said. She also emphasized the importance of recognizing corporate partners whose support makes the scholarships possible.
Special thanks were extended to the MLK Commemorative Celebration Committee, Impact Church of The Woodlands, and The Woodlands Methodist Church for their collaboration.
