Matthew Yu from College Park High School in Conroe ISD has been recognized as a 2024 YoungArts winner. This award is significant because it acknowledges exceptional talent in various artistic disciplines.
Matthew, a junior and a member of the Academy of Science and Technology, won in the Visual Arts category. To apply, he had to submit a portfolio of 10 artworks and write several essays explaining his art.
YoungArts is a national program that selects students through a thorough application process, judged by experts in each artistic field. Matthew became interested in YoungArts after watching a video of actor Timothee Chalamet, a former winner in Theatre.
As a winner, Matthew will go to Miami for a week to attend workshops, showcase his work, and learn from top professionals. This event is an opportunity for him to meet and interact with other talented artists from various fields, including dance, music, theater, film, design, and writing.
Matthew's personal interest lies in mixed media art and urban sketching, which involves drawing cityscapes on location. He now has the chance to be nominated as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and could win up to $10,000 during the YoungArts week.
YoungArts winners are recognized for their potential and are provided with several opportunities for growth. They receive financial support, development opportunities, and access to a private online platform for networking with other artists. Additionally, they can attend special programs in Los Angeles and New York.
Matthew has aspirations of showcasing his work in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
