The Woodlands Clinch 13th Consecutive Title, Cox Secures Individual Win
The Woodlands High School golf teams dominated the 2024 District 13-6A Boys Golf Championship at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club, with the A-Team clinching their 13th consecutive district title and the B-Team earning a historic spot in the Regionals.
Amid the backdrop of clear skies and a cool touch in the 60s, the fairways of High Meadow Ranch Golf Club became the stage for The Woodlands High School's continued success in golf.
The A-Team lived up to their legacy by finishing with a stellar score of +7, while the B-Team's second-place finish with a total of +40 is a significant achievement, marking their return to the Regional Championship.
Their standout player, Caden Cox, delivered a bogie-free second round, contributing significantly to the team's triumph. Cox's consistent performance peaked on the 8th, where a masterful chip-in led to a par, and on the 11th and 18th holes, his putts under pressure exemplified the mental strength needed to secure the individual title.
Freshman Tripp Depoy, showing maturity beyond his years, claimed second place with rounds of 75 and 70, a remarkable feat for his first district championship appearance. Sophomore Abhay Duggal, another promising talent for The Woodlands, shared a third-place finish. Duggal's competitive edge was evident, especially on the final hole, where his 9-iron shot to within 7 feet of the pin resulted in a birdie that clinched his playoff spot.
“It’s been a long time since we advanced our B team to Regionals.” – Coach Eric Noski
Coach Noski praised the younger players, like Tripp, whom he described as a talented and coachable player, and sophomore Abhay, whom he sees as a fierce competitor, especially noting Duggal's clutch birdie on the 18th that tied him for third place. These performances exemplify the team's depth and set a high expectation for their upcoming challenges.
Coach Eric Noski commended the team's commitment and Mauricio Bremer's significant contribution in senior Daniel Zoe's absence, remarking, "The level of dedication and adaptability shown by our players is the backbone of our team's success." He eagerly anticipates Zoe's return for the Regionals, adding an extra layer of strategy and expertise to The Woodlands' roster. Their efforts reflect the depth and potential of The Woodlands' team, which has been a powerhouse in Texas high school golf.
Coach Eric Noski's pride in his teams was palpable when he noted, “Our A-Team has been solid throughout the year, and the B-Team's advancement is a testament to our program's depth. We're looking forward to bringing our best to the Regionals and hopefully securing our fourth consecutive Regional Championship win.”
The Woodlands' history at the state tournament and their winning streak at the regional tournament in the past years underscore the significance of their continuous pursuit of excellence.
Looking ahead, The Woodlands sets its sights on the 2024 Regional Championship scheduled for April 15 and 16 in Waco, Texas, followed by the State Championship in Georgetown on April 29 and 30. With three consecutive Regional Championships behind them, The Woodlands aims to improve upon their previous performances at the state level, where they finished second in the state tournament last year and sixth in 2023.
As they prepare for the challenges ahead, The Woodlands golf teams are buoyed by their district success and the support of their community. With a talented roster and a tradition of excellence, they are poised to make a strong showing at the Regional and State Championships.
